The coppice: a forest for migratory birds

Paolo Casanova, Anna Memoli

Abstract

The problem of migratory birds concerns of central and northern Europe, the Mediterranean basin, and therefore Italy, together with the coasts of northern Africa.
Generally speaking, the most southern areas mentioned above are the hibernating zone for many species, which find here a favourable climate and enough food to overcome the
winter season. Sometimes, due to particularly cold winters, some roaming may be noticed. It is well known now that an adequate winter feeding is the basis of a good
reproduction. Therefore the best way to protect these species consist of a proper management of the woods and pastures, in order to supply them with adequate alimentary stocks. Particularly, the kind of management of wood top-soil is the most important factor for the preservation of migratory birds: a common heritage of all Europe and a good part of northern Africa
